An ISP has monitored its network on WhatsUp Gold for over ten years

Net Bright supplied and has supported Progress WhatsUp Gold for a Thai ISP for more than a decade — across generations of hardware, several network expansions and every licence renewal in between.

Network monitoring for an internet service provider

The challenge

An ISP finds out about its own outages from customers unless it sees them first. The network is large, spread across sites, and made of equipment from more than one vendor — so the monitoring has to be vendor-neutral or it only covers part of the estate.

The harder requirement is not detection but attention. A monitoring system that alerts on everything gets muted within a month, and a muted system is the same as no system.

What we supplied

Progress WhatsUp Gold discovers the network and maps it, then watches devices, interfaces, links and services over SNMP and flow data — regardless of who made the hardware.

Alerting is tuned to what an operations team can act on: thresholds and dependencies so a single upstream failure raises one alert rather than a hundred, and escalation so the right person is woken rather than everyone.

Net Bright is the authorized Progress distributor in Thailand, so the licence, the version upgrades and any vendor escalation all sit with the team that installed it.

Ten years is the point

Monitoring platforms are easy to buy and easy to abandon. This one has been in production for over a decade, through hardware generations and network expansions, and has been renewed every cycle.

No ISP renews a monitoring licence for ten years out of habit. It stays because the operations team still opens it first when something is wrong.
